Having hosted the Winter Olympics earlier on in 2014, Sochi and Russia finally got their chance to host the other most prestigious sporting event in the World, with Formula One taking to the all new Sochi Autodrom Circuit on Sunday 12th October 2014.
Sochi was a little known Russian city until it won the Winter Olympics for 2014 and Russia's first Formula One race the same year. Sochi, which is located on the Black Sea and has a population of circa 350,000, is Russia's biggest resort City. Sochi now has the contract for the Formula One race until 2020, and will be the host city for the 2018 FA World Cup.
In its first year, in addition to the Russian Formula One event, the Sochi Autodrom hosted the domestic Russian Road Racing Series, as well as the Russian Triathalon Cup Final and the Sochi Half Marathon. Not surprisingly on the 13th November 2014, the Sochi Autodrom was awarded 'Motorsport Facility of the Year Award' at the Professional Motorsport World Expo in Cologne, Germany.
The autodrom is Russia's only all year round motorsport venue and aside from preparations for the 2015 Formula One Russian Grand Prix, the circuit is busy establishing a the Russian home for a number of regional, national and international motorsport events. A 'Master Driving Academy' is also planned to open in 2015.
For the 2014 Formula One Russian Grand Prix, D.O.T was busy as always. With the calendar scheduled as it was, the Russian Grand Prix was a back-to-back event with Japan; this meant D.O.T had to have its motorsport event logistics teams split between the two countries for a number of days to ensure all motorsport cargo left Japan and arrived in Russia in a timely manner and was customs cleared and at the circuit in plenty of time for its clients to set up prior to the race weekend.
For the international rounds of the Formula One World Championship, D.O.T has a dedicated team of motorsport event logistics personnel that travel to each event to handle a varied amount of cargo for suppliers to the series. The overseas team is backed up by the company's operations team in the headquarters in London.
On average D.O.T moves approximately 50,000kg of motorsport event cargo from each international round to the next. In addition to this the company has a fleet of dedicated trucks and forty foot trailers that attend all of the European rounds moving motorsport event cargo from race to race.
